The South Branch Valley saw an incredible amount of troop activity and action during the Civil War. Grant County, created from the western part of Hardy County in 1866 out of Civil War conflict, bears the name of one of the war’s most illustrious warriors, Ulysses Simpson Grant.
The Old Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The “old” portion of the building dates back to 1878, and the color of the brick shows where old and “new 1909” editions meet. A WW I monument was added out front of the building in 1928. The community and historical society have created a museum with rotating exhibits that feature local business, families, and daily rural life. Their Veteran’s Room is filled with photos, uniforms, and other memorabilia collected from the Civil War, Spanish American War, World Wars I & II, Korea, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars.
Enjoy a “Veterans Tribute” guided half hour tour, by local historical society member, or browse through the building on your own.
