Heavy Equipment Mechanic & Welder

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad, located in Romney, WV, is currently accepting applications for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic and Welder to maintain and troubleshoot railway locomotives, railway cars, diesel generator sets, and other support equipment, such as telehandlers, air compressors, and related machinery. Primary work locations are the railway station and shop facility. Basic electrical knowledge as it pertains to this equipment is desirable. Local travel may be required as needed.

Railway locomotives to be repaired and maintained are EMD first-generation models. Passenger equipment consists of older steel and lightweight cars. Current support equipment includes a telehandler, rough-terrain crane, and air compressors. Work on other equipment may be required as needs arise. Attention to detail and safety is required. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are required. Interaction with Potomac Eagle’s customers may occur at times and requires a positive attitude and professional demeanor.

Responsibilities, Requirements, and Skills:

  • Expertly analyze and diagnose equipment problems and breakdowns.

  • Recommend the correct service and repair actions to resolve equipment performance issues.

  • Make appropriate equipment repairs and modifications to resolve operating and performance problems identified through equipment analysis.

  • Efficiently perform scheduled equipment maintenance.

  • Document each work order and provide any necessary paperwork.

  • Remain dedicated to getting the job done while meeting standards of quality and safety.

  • Perform effective troubleshooting to identify hazards or malfunctions and repair or replace damaged components.

  • Perform weld repairs as needed.

  • Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies using welding equipment.

  • Perform structural welding using a variety of procedures, such as groove welds, fillet welds, complete joint penetration welds, and partial joint penetration welds.

  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.

  • Operate equipment to move, lift, and place metals and weldments.

  • Proficient in GMAW/MIG, SMAW/Stick, and GTAW/TIG welding.

  • Basic knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of metal fabrications and other structures.

  • Proficient in the use of a manual plasma cutter and oxy-fuel cutting torch.

  • Proficient in the use and reading of various measuring devices.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

  • Willingness to train for railway conductor and locomotive engineer certification and fulfill needed vacancies on occasion.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.

  • High degree of manual dexterity with good hand-eye coordination.

  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces.

  • Must have the physical stamina to perform continuous full-body movements, including climbing, reaching, pushing, lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling.

  • Ability to perform strenuous and heavy work, exerting force up to 100 pounds on occasion and frequently handling loads up to 50 pounds.

  • Maintain predictable and reliable attendance.

  • Follow company safety procedures, use common sense, and maintain a strong level of safety awareness while operating in the work environment.

  • Make effective decisions in unfamiliar or emergency situations.

  • Willing and able to work a flexible schedule as needed, including weekends and extended hours.

  • Perform additional tasks as required by a supervisor from time to time.

  • This position is subject to Potomac Eagle’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy, which may include pre-employment, post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.

Other Optional Knowledge and Experience:

  • HVAC and refrigeration.

  • Railway conductor or engineer experience.
