Electrician/HVAC Tech

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad, located in Romney, WV, is currently accepting applications for a versatile Electrician/HVAC Technician to maintain, troubleshoot, and install various electrical systems. The primary work environment includes railroad passenger cars, the station, office buildings, and locomotives. Work may occasionally begin at different local locations.

Electrical systems include, but are not limited to, 3-phase 480-volt power, 240-volt power, 120-volt power, lighting, DC systems, audio systems, and computer networks. Control system diagnostic knowledge, such as that found in HVAC systems, generators, and railway locomotives, is needed. Exhaustive knowledge of all systems is not required; however, the ability and desire to learn and research unfamiliar technologies is essential. Attention to detail and safety is required. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are required. Interaction with Potomac Eagle’s customers may occur at times and requires a positive attitude and professional demeanor.

Responsibilities, Requirements, and Skills:

  • Dedicated to getting the job done while meeting standards of quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

  • Diagnose and repair control systems using relay logic, such as those found in HVAC controls, generator controls, and railway locomotives.

  • Execute plans for the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring for properly functioning power, lighting, audio, network, and other electrical systems.

  • Prevent system breakdowns by routinely inspecting and replacing old wiring and insulated cables, cleaning circuits, and performing related maintenance.

  • Perform effective troubleshooting to identify hazards or malfunctions and repair or replace damaged units.

  • Test and troubleshoot completed installations.

  • Select appropriate wiring for specific installations.

  • Install and maintain cabling, raceways, conduits, boxes, wiring, devices, apparatuses, and trims.

  • Knowledge of AC and DC systems and the National Electrical Code (NEC).

  • Ability to identify and interpret wiring and schematic diagrams.

  • Computer application skills for documentation and research, including Windows, Word, Excel, email, and related programs.

  • Knowledge of Amtrak HEP power systems is preferred.

  • Knowledge of railway locomotive systems is preferred.

  • Willingness to train for railway conductor and locomotive engineer certification and fulfill needed vacancies on occasion.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.

  • High degree of manual dexterity with good hand-eye coordination.

  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces.

  • Periodic bending, stooping, squatting, and kneeling.

  • Maintain predictable and reliable attendance.

  • Follow company safety procedures, use common sense, and maintain a strong level of safety awareness while operating in the work environment.

  • Make effective decisions in unfamiliar or emergency situations.

  • Perform additional tasks as required by a supervisor from time to time.

Other Optional Knowledge and Experience:

  • HVAC and refrigeration.

  • Welding.

  • Railway conductor or engineer experience.

  • Heavy equipment mechanic experience, especially with railway equipment.
